You're biting off more than you can chew. If you don't feel like you have enough experience to "start" a portfolio, don't try and make an entire game. Even if you had the skills, developing a game takes a loooong time, especially for one person. Also, why is it going to take you a year and a half to "start" a portfolio?… -

Well, its an old PSU, so who cares? If it only lasts one more year, he can buy another if/when it dies. No use preemptively buying new stuff just because something "might" fail. The UE3 engine uses some sort of streaming system to make sure everything on the screen is at a fairly high texture resolution - this works for their games, but a 2kx2k cardboard box is not going to happen in every game.
