It's been a while since I touched SpeedTree, but I remember they used a whole lot of UV channels (7-8). I think they just blend different channels using vertex colors (or alpha), plus of course adjust the normals. Certainly there are no additional alpha textures other than the detail texture with alpha.
The only thing I bake in Mental Ray is AO, and even that gets bunged up and I end up reverting back to scanline with a custom light set up. It's been going on 6-7 years now that I've been waiting for them to work the kinks out of MR and they're still working on it...
Well, the original G4 TV was launched in part by Microsoft. It was 24/7 about games. Reviews, previews, etc etc. I saw an early broadcast of it, and it was really good. It's sad to see what they've done to it now. Like you guys said, X-Play is about the only worthy thing left on it.

make sure you have the proper plugin-file installed. LSCMUnwrap_6to8.gup and not any of the other versions. If that still fails I sadly cannot help (don't have max6&7 to debug). The plugin was compiled against max6 sdk, so in theory it should work fine (at least does under 8).

is it bad enough that deleting the history and optimizing scene file doesn't clean things up? how about exporting/reimporting an .obj of your model periodically? i'm guessing you have an earlier version of maya than 7. koshigaya, open maya toolbox, and bonus game have the tools you're looking for.
