max only refreshes my diffuse by default, and the spec/hight/etc need manual reload command. is there a way to set it an auto refresh all?

Don´t forget to press reload in the editor when you are exporting a new mesh and your editor is already open....

Also the reload animation due to where the ammo mag is will make for an interesting FPS event... which balances the simplicity of design?

Yeah, I do that too, it's just a hassle to rebake and reload when you are changing uvs or troubleshooting your bakes.

I find it helpful when painting tiled textures in Photoshop. Crazy Bump doesn't dynamically reload external bitmaps AFAIK.
