Im in the midst of wrapping my head around the Blend layer my self and as far as i can tell your suppose to use the same opacity map on all your meshes and control the variation between them by adding different alpha color values to the vertices. That's at least the more efficient way of doing it as opposed to the meshes…
Editing the model after its been rigged is a dicey operation. But you can use the skinwrap modifier, target the original mesh (hopefully the verts are still roughly in the same place) and then convert to skin. Unlike load save skin weights, skin wrap uses the verts positions in world space instead of relying on the vertex…

It seems to me that they have a solid direction they have in mind (you play a kid-based shooter vs kiddie zombies) and the pricing levels just add new multiplayer additions to the basic game. I agree, though, it does kind of suck that there isn't a proof of concept or even any basis that the game won't be a simple shooter…
