Some inspiration: http://www.3dcg-arts.net/ Follow some of the links to authors pages, they have tuts, but in Japanese. The modeling of the heads have not changed much over the years, just texture work.
I found this earlier today: http://www.3dcg-arts.net/arts/1395?via_fave=246 I'm not even sure if it is using the same technique. I can't tell if the above is using a shader or the shadows are baked.
I don't know why everyone is being so quiet about this. There was a thread back on 4chan in /3dcg/ that asked this question. Chances are that thread still exists considering how slow that place is. The answer you're looking for is in there. If not, just start a new thread there.

My workflow is like this: 1. sculpt in voxels/surface mode, either from voxel primitives or a curve rig (like zspheres). I dont' do base meshes as much anymore and definitely don't model them first to bring into 3dc. The tools are more than adequate for blocking out stuff in voxels If I need a base for anything it happens…
It's an old argument. Art is cheating. Artists have always used the most advanced tools available to them at the time. The tools are a means to an end, and not every piece needs to be about the technical aspects of its creation. Don't forget that artists were worried that 3DCG would make them obsolete. Or that photography…
Not for me. Ive been using zBrush since 2004. That was also the last time I paid for it. I remember when 3DCoat came out and depending on what you made depended on whether you were allowed to purchase it. So I didn't. Some time later the censure was dropped and I decided to try 3DC on my laptop. Could not get it to work. I…
I bought my 21UX (2012 rev.) from ebay. I was lucky because some defunct studio in Miami was selling used 21 UXes for less than 400 bucks. Although the one I bought had some darker spot on the lower left side of the screen, it's basically unnoticeable. Ironically, I don't like to use 3D on a Cintiq. I prefer practicing…
