Unless you are modeling the inner parts, there isn't a difference. Military versions of the AR-15 type of rifle, like the M16, M4, etc, can fire 3-round burst. Older M16's had full-auto. I don't know about Arena Net's engine in question, but nearly all modern game engines struggle much less with polygon count than they used to, but they still choke up over drawcalls and shader complexity; the more texture maps, the more drawcalls. The problem isn't as bad as you think, you are just suffering now because you didn't have a clear plan at the onset.
