it's a bit rough and ready with no error checking evaluate the attached macro script and add to your ui then in editable poly select an edge and press the button and you can slide along the edge all you want.... it could also be adapted to work on editable mesh
No everything bakes correctly, except the shell that i marked it's being baked as if it's it between the buttons and the cylindrical object, even tho the UV's aren't overlapping
I believe you've applied it as an object space normal map, try unchecking that box. If it's not that try toggling Scale & Bias or in the Options button Srgb.
It is possible but, a pain in the arse that requires a lot of cleanup. As monster says, some tech knowledge is required and it's certainly not just a matter of clicking the 'send to' button.
