philem: you are right, you need to merge the two cubes into one object first. in object mode, select the two cube then execute Modiy > Object Commands > Combine.
Yes you are right.. If the selected vertices don't make up a face then the vertex selection is lost in translation. The same applies with edges. It makes sense if you think about it.
