Congratulations on earning your first money from what you like to do! From the small roof of windmill, i like more the first one :) I am right now working on similar project but in realistic style so it is interesting to follow your progress on this. Cheers
Look at this guy's stuff, how he does it. https://www.artstation.com/artist/damian94 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36QvaZTjPcA About the logs. I guess it's a combination of individual meshes for cornes and tilable textures for walls. About the roof, the method you described is the same he uses.
It feels good to finish them too! I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but the areas on the exterior I think you're talking about (The roof mostly) typically aren't where players will be looking in part because they're just a flat colour, but mostly because there's nothing there.
This sucks. Needs more bearskin in front of the fireplace. ;) On a more serious note i think you should introduce some more colors. The low texel density on roof panels (inside) is quite obvious to. Other then that i think this looks awesome! Love the light so far!
A shaded view of both the front and back would be nice. But more importantly some of the major features deviate from the original. Three towers have a roof cone with several sides, and one has diamond shaped sides. I gotta go but I'll be back to add more.
Here's another comparison, using the Unity demo scene. Only change is the bloom. I like how it subtly softens the edges of bright surfaces, but doesn't hit you over the head with it. Especially where the roofs and terrain touch the sky, but also on the green ground and the sunlit buildings.
I would love to do this, but I don't have 40+ hours a week to do 3D anymore :( I gotta keep a roof over my head *sigh* Good Luck to those who can afford to do this, I'm jealous that I can't take on this opportunity.
Heres two renders as updates. Scene is at 50k tris and still in 3ds max. soon as I'm done with the major architectural assets I'll start moving this scene into UDK. At the moment, mostly the roof and some wall pieces needs more work both mesh and texture wise.
You are right indeed, I did this and it was my "roof" planes I put in just to block out the sun from inside that had no UVs. I re-unwrapped the blockout model and re-imported to the engine, re-built the light and all looks beautiful! Thanks a lot!!
only crit if I may, more dirt and cracks on the roof would look nice! also, since I'm stuck on this game, I think assassin's creed could be good reference for this scene.. keep up the good work! Now I want to do one too!!
