Put an Edit Normals modifier on the model, select the normals for the flat part of the model and click the Average:Selected button. -

Xgen does bake the painted texture into ptex during painting automatically . And i never used this button for painting with xgen. -

There is a reset button in the modifier, just press it and then push it by raising the "amount" under "push". Edit: ahh too slow :D -
