You can actually change the green channel in xnormal to the behaviour you want...(same goes for 3dsmax)

Just go for blender or 3dsmax/maya they probably have the best and the fastest low-poly modeling workflows.

3dsMax 2014 is 64bit only, so it wouldn't surprise me if they are dropping 32bit support across the board.

Model it in 3dsmax export it with the grip and use Zproject this is only for a test its not the best method i will add it later in SP
