I was on one or two missions where if you get close enough, you can just aim the gun and you'll see a gauge around the crosshair that fills up the longer you have it on the target. The ZIntensity controls the depth with projection master. It's harder to notice when you're dropped to the document since you're staring at it straight on, but it still works the same.
