It depends on what kind of studio you're applying at. I stick to stylized low poly stuff so I still include some 5 year old assets in my portfolio; if you're applying to snazzy AAA next gen studios you should probably get rid of everything that isn't PBR. -

This is the first step to a true next-gen pipeline for hardsurface (organic stuff has had it for years). Now some sort of smart, easy retopo tool would be next. I don't know much about the existing solutions for organics (like Z-remesher), but how well do they work for hard-surface ? -
Re: PBR texturing, is it worth it?
I would def learn PBR...its going to become industry standard soon. Understanding those principles is vital because it is a more realistic interpretation of lighting in next gen engines. That being said, though I understand the tech, I haven't used it on a character yet so I'm in the same boat! -

@Iniside I agree with that, with next gen coming out UE4 is sure to dominate professional markets and indie markets alike. I am one of the many Indie's anticipating the release of UDK4, I keep watching the feature walk-through each time I load my web browser up :P -

well i have made game demos in the past. if I had gone that one stage further I could probably have made a company. i was offered a small publishing deal but figured it was n't enough money. I think ther is a huge untapped market for pc games that are 'not' next gen -

What a bunch of bull. All of those games have been released or will see a release/sequel soon on a current gen console. I don't think they've approached this objectively. What happened to all those SNES, Megadrive, TG16, X68k, NEOGEO, or GBA games? Where's (one of the newer) Castlevania(s)? -

chunky bricks look awesome to me! although the ones on the ground look pretty pointy for a flat walking surface :P and they also rather oversimplified their comparison model, you can get much nicer effects with 'current gen' tech obviously. I mean they made the staircase a 2 poly ramp ffs -

It's also a matter of people are still learning high end 3d. We've been doing low poly 3d for so long, that we're scrambling to learn high poly, before next-gen slams into our faces. Once we all learn the high end stuff, there will be more and more models available.
