Why mouse wheel in max? Just press Alt+Ctrl and middle click and you can zoom , or press alt+z to enter zooming mode. -

In max you can lock pan/zoom for viewport backgrounds. Set it it match bitmap then lock zoom/pan and it works great. -

you could even go with a video, and 3 or 4 images. Some zoomed in/some zoomed out. I like the image with the church tower and the cycle of clouds above it. -

If you move the camera further from your subject, and use zoom, this will reduce the distortion. The further you go, and the stronger the zoom, the better. -

Will it keep in proportions if I zoom in and out? When I tried something like this before, when I zoomed in and out to look at details, the reference would get out of place. -

Not sure about the aliasing. It could be either your render filter, or it could be the relatively small size bevels in relation to camera zoom..Try zooming in and see if the area still renders with aliasing. -

pretty. took me a second to realize the red-beacons 'zoom' you in a level and the white ones 'zoom' you out very intuitive though, and fun.
