Styx sounds good, haven't tried it yet. You could also load the demo soldier into a scene. That model is at optimal size for sculpting in ZB. Then bring in the pillars. It's also important to remember that there are two modes in max, Object and Sub-Object mode (Vert, Edge, Poly, Element). If you move something in Sub-Object mode you aren't changing the actual objects pivot position just the elements inside the sub-object.
