Solved with hotkeys for going ortho and pointing the camera towards different angles, it's how most modern editors do it.

its a vertex normal problem on the border vertices. unifying normals on the borders of your platforms should solve that problem.

I solved the problem by just remaking the top of the model using a square with extrusions on the inside faces and attaching that to the model.

No change. To solve it, add an Edit Normals modifier, and collapse it. You could add that step to a macroscript if you want.
