in your modify panel, go into "edit edges" there you'll find a button called "turn" use it :) -

also, besides ctrl, holding down alt gives additional informtion for some buttons and tools. -

Does the image format have an alpha channel? In the Opacity channel, is this radio button set to Alpha? -

Those don't actually load until you press a button. Before that, it's just a preview image. -
