Usually face weighted normals could fix it without any extra geometry. Blender has a modifier for that for example

These are looking great. The depth of field effect though looks like it was done in 2D. The lips are oddly blurry for example.

We use IPR for this instead. But still, like RT it has limitations. Displacement settings for example require a refresh.

For example Mechwarrior Online is using a lot of not watertight, not connected meshes. This watertight thing is bit outdated in 2019 imo
