You cant create a usable height-map by converting it from some other map. Instead, you must pick up detail from a highpoly model and put it into the texture of a low-poly model (the lowpoly model can just be a single polygon square plane too). To get a heightmap, you must pick it up from a highpoly. The fact that there is…
Been wondering about this. Looks an awesome thing (thank you) but a very quick test of mine making some blobs led to this in PS: https://www.evernote.com/shard/s89/sh/a56b3880-4a47-4b71-acee-0b03c56ee1b2/8b55e98fabb4ea00c8c0f7d75d5cde8d after an offset. This is on a 1024 project. Nice but would need some cleanup work…
I had to use it in a PS2 engine, which was of course fixed pipeline. Ideal texture size on ps2 is 128*128 4bits (16 colors) and the engine used a subdivision terrain system. Everything was modeled in quads and subdivided on the fly (with nifty low res displacement maps, which was very nice at the time). I guess this is all…
No need to export it for using references. You can create a new scene and reference the maya rig file in multiple times. http://download.autodesk.com/global/docs/maya2013/en_us/index.html?url=files/GUID-9E08C7ED-BF66-4BEB-8CA4-D83B34F8B48D.htm,topicNumber=d30e127234

I would use spline IK for this http://help.autodesk.com/view/3DSMAX/2015/ENU/?guid=GUID-787BE013-B685-4DA0-A9FE-8146B3235BA3 But you could manually set it up as well. Look into Expressions. http://help.autodesk.com/view/3DSMAX/2015/ENU/?guid=GUID-65186F02-824B-4BBE-8559-69275E036E6C
