Unfortunately you only got it half right. If you have smoothing groups/hard edges, you have to split the uv shells everywhere you have a hard edge. Yup, Align is the fastest way. Snap can also do it, but takes a few more clicks and isn't as solid. Turn on snaps for Pivot and for Edge/Segment, this will let you snap a pivot to an edge. If you go to Options and turn on Use Axis Constraints, it will only snap along the active axis, in your case you want to activate Z.… -
