If you already know 3dsmax, than you can just stick with the graphite modeling tools (the old polyboost plugin) and its capabilities for retopo. -

What Swordslayer posted is a 3DSMax 'Creation Graph' , Maxs built in node-based scripting system. It's only available in Max 2016 and newer though. -

Could you try bringing your high poly in Maya/3dsMax and exporting an FBX through there? Also could you attach a log file? -

3dsMax has a little-known feature(it seems these days) called the official documentation. The hotkey is F1. There is a section dedicated to explaining the basics of smoothing groups. -
