@Revel: I made the lowpoly to use the smooth or subdivided version i think its the easy way to model that think, but like @oglu said my mesh dont match exactly the concept, i think it would be solved smoothing to have more polygons and moving some vertices so the holes are exactly like the image -

So whats the deal with the one smoothing group requirement? Sure, it might down vertice cost, but won't it also introduce big gradients into your normal map and when coupled with comression, look possible worse in some areas? Can I still use smoothing splits in some areas and get the benifits of this new pipeline? -

The edit normal modifier is pretty much what you're looking for. Check the help files, but you can manually rotate each vertex normals, align normals between different objects... Blue normals are the default ones, affected by the smoothing groups, the green normals are the edited ones (or "explicit") thus not anymore… -

ah ok. Yea i tried it but i couldnt achieve the result i wanted. Its edgy and not realy smooth little curles. It always feels like it has not enough vertex points to get the smooth curve or the same length. But only thing i can change are the segments i guess and at 50 its limited. -

uv seams are not present there , smoothing groups are smooth and set to 1 on that area, whats non normalized uv islands? I added the pic of the normal map but actually I have some strange black linees on the diffuse , this is what made me check the normal map then I saw those linees and I got the picture ... -

Yep, more islands = more verts at runtime = slower rendering mesh. Also, if you don't use different smoothing groups where you break off the islands, you could end up having normal smoothing errors as well. Use as many as you need, just don't make them without reason. -

There is very little explanation on the shader. The Smoothness + Metal you put in one texture image but its not great. I think Green = Metal and Alpha = Smoothness - that texture is put into the metal slot - have a play around with images in different texture channels and figure out which is correct as i might be wrong.… -

Do your smoothing groups match according to the UVs? You usually only want hard edges along UV seams, and smooth everywhere else. I would also recommend making a cage, as it can have a substantial effect on the quality of your bakes. I believe the Push modifier will make a cage pretty easily in Max. -

Some pointers that may help, Try using hard brushes, this will prevent the drawing from becoming blurry. For smooth transitions/ skin, i start out with hard brushes with x% to create the contrast, and then use the smudge tool to smooth it out a bit. Smooth model: Open the actorx exporter options and turn off(or on if it is off) "bake smoothing groups" Seems to work better that way out of maya, might help in max too. As for for glowing in the sun, its likely either a material issue or a map issue. Screenshots and info on what material you are using as a parent might…
