Aesthetics as well as functionality could be enhanced by doing that. Fangs on the hand guard would cause vicious wounds on someone punched by it.

Couldnt you use the border function somehow? The inner border gets rounded but the outer border doesnt i think.

Also, Kbrom's got a point--it's functionally there if you turn on the grid snapping for movement/placement, even if you can't see it.

Wait I thought refraction was always based on Snell's law and if Im not mistaken the refract intrinsic function is based off it.

your best bet would be to use a plugin for maya's uv editor like UVDeluxe that has an edge straightening function
