If you're having UE4 compute it on import then you don't want your exported mesh to contain binormal and tangent data. If you give xNormal a mesh containing those already, it won't calculate new ones for baking. So OBJ should be fine. I'd still use FBX though... just disable tangent data in your FBX export preferences.
I guess it would depend on the definition of what each pass type contains... what is Level vs Output vs. Raw vs. Specular. Anything in the Help file about them? If your material doesn't contain those elements, then you'll probably get empty passes. Like if you tried to render a Reflection pass but had no Reflect…

BFF did work great, but has gathered a bit of dust since then. Another way would be to save the source Max file, then create a Container or Xref in the target scene. Everytime you save the source, the target Container would be updated. If Xref, IIRC you have to manually refresh the target .

The barrel container on the back needs more work, maybe make it lighter coloured theres 2 cut out holes on the back grey piece (Above the barrel container) which look offset incorrectly compared to the ref image Apart from that, its a great start! keep up the good work :)
