Sry, i mean the vertex normals.yes, specular is always worth,but it looks better with normalmap.also i would make a few variation for the grass, instead of using that "X" shaped -

Unfortunately not or at least I haven't find a way... What you can do is to project them back with something like the NormalThief. If that doesn't work well, then no idea, sry. -
