what kind of troubles? the upperbody here is pretty much humanlike, so i suggest looking at some other low poly torso meshes. download and check this one: http://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/351964 it's a basic male template, but should give you a good idea how to model.

thanks for the advice guys, i've gotten the model down to under 350 polys now. and also thanks for the warning about the student software, i'm going to try and find some places that sell max cheaper than what autodesk is offering. Does anyone know any good places to look?
Yeah absolutely, I wasn't suggesting the raw method would be equal in quality by any means, though I think for this sort of thing it would be good enough(8bit LDR is good enough in a lot of cases).
