It might save some storage space, and you'll have less texture files in your project folders. So, could be a good idea in a production environment with strict storage requirements, however, it's not necessary for a portfolio pieces.

no more than ten i would say, usually way less. but i guess a temp folder with pngs (or something) that get comped together would lower the need of having all of it in memory until it is done?
