3. If you want to merge to center you can also use the collapse feature. 4. Can use the weld or collapse if you dont want new polys in between. If it is 2 separate objects then you can use the attach button to make it 1.

You question my skills! Seriously though, it's a bug. It tends to happen when merging things (which also tends to crash on me every now and then), or when adding geometry. There are probably ways to avoid it, and i'm trying to find alternatives all the time, but it's a pain.
At the end of Ep 3 some guy says that Obi Wan found a method to become transcendent. Of course that makes no sense since Vader appears as a ghost at the end, too, yet he never became transcendent, he merely died and got blown up.
