That is probably the easiest method, although I would then save out the skin weights and load them into the original mesh/rig, the FBX export/import might bork your skeleton in some weird ways. Looks great! If I may suggest something, think about adding some blood splats coming from a space monster that one just pwned with this gun. Like toxic green or pink blood drops here and there, nothing major - my first thought when I saw your design. I think it could add even more to teh sci-fi theme. Again, great work!
