I was under the impression it was a choice, to emulate te aesthetics of 35mm film. Hence the lens flares, depth of field, motion blur, and chromatic aberration. I believe Half Life 2 the first game to really played with dynamic ranges and clamping values greatly added to the gameplay.

I think its safer to assume its an unknown. The foundry hasnt really been known to do sales like that, though Luxology has. With the Foundry up for sale, what if the new owners say "no sales"!
