I think you really need to differentiate with the different materials on your mesh. It helps to separate out the pieces like the gloves, belts, boots, and clothes that he is wearing and work on them separately. He doesn't mean the right foot to the left foot symmetry. He means the outside of the foot vs the inside of the foot. A foot has a very distinct shape and your boot is perfectly straight.
