It looks like the textures are coming from a Texture Project, so the color space for the normal map will be configured automatically. The preview thumbnail will look brighter when set to linear space (the correct setting). Please make sure that your mesh normals are averaged/smoothed, and that your exporter is configured…
+1 to what Eric said. Use another engine to test your assets and your workflow. Ideally an engine which uses same file formats and has a similar renderer. We had countless textures in UE4. I even built a small level with foliage and had our vehicle in UE4 when we didn't have our level editor and renderer ready.

@Eric Chadwick i had considered doing something similar... i was thinking of having some kind of low poly fake interior of the wing/ flaps with basically no UV space or polys, paint it black and then rethink the hole punching pattern... i will probably do something like that... i just don't want to have to go about re-UV…
