I'm resurrecting this thread from 2012 just to say that Bal's method of using Paint Effects to create geometry directly from a curve has come in very handy. Thank you.
so I just installed the trial version of Maya 2012 (was using 2011) and it now works.... guess your right about Maya's shitty viewport rendering, sort it out autodesk...

It is weird. I'm using 3dsMax 2012 too, but I have not met problem like this. If cursor hover over work window it's automatically switch to zoom when I use mousewheel

Another quick update. Found tangents work from 2012 if you use the 2012.2 fbx exporter where are the 2013.3 one seems to cause some problems when going into unreal
