huzzah, windows rebooted gave an error message that uxtheme.dll wasn't a windows image and refused to load the shell, luckily I could reboot into safe mode with command prompt and restore the backup that way. I'm using WinXP Pro -

Yeah, I don't think Textfield is the right way to display a text prompt... Maybe, Instead of the textField -text $name; using... text -label $name; would be fine.. as long as I can find a way to update the $name variable -

Doesn't sound right - you should be getting a prompt for export options. I remember downloading it directly from their site. As other suggested, have you exported an FBX or OBJ and then re-imported it into a fresh max scene then tried the export? -
