New Bamboo is out...check it out at your local Wacom site if you want to compare prices. Pressure sensitivity has been upgraded to 1024! -

I think you would try using tileable textures for the better part of the hull, and spice it up with more geo and local detail on separate textures. -

You can use what comic book artists use: bristol boards. Check your local or fav online art store. They come in pads.
