Did some hair tubes and projected the high poly detail onto my retopo. Thought about setting up my initial pieces inside Maya with UVs but then made a custom IMM brush inside ZBrush. UV Master is actually giving good results for the tubes so I'll stick to this:
getting around the problem with adding panels to low poly meshes using edge split, soldify and bevel. So of course this technique is non destructive. lots of tutorials on this on You Tube
