Nice design!! I suggest giving the cable more edge segments. Its the only part that looks a bit low-poly right now. Also I would make the orange color more bright and saturated. You have all the bullets UV'd individually?? - The 35k would be ok for a next gen weapon in my opinion. It really shouldn't be a problem, except if you have limits. -

You pay for what you get- this person is looking to pay someone a minimal amount and they are going to get art that reflects that. I'm not sure who the 'you people' you are referring to are, but no one who say, has a day rate of $350 or charges $40/hour ect, is going to look at that and go 'well I guess I need to take… -

Only if you're working in a studio. Otherwise you can just pay $1500 ($900 around Christmas) for Modo plus CC subscription. Compared to paying ~$3500 for Maya, $800 for ZBrush, another ~$200 a month to get updates for Maya, and the CC subscription. Of course I think a studio would usually pay for that stuff for you, so...
