Have you tried freezing transformations and deleting history on the curve? Have you tried moving the pivot around by activating the move tool and holding down the 'd' key?
Couldn't you do that with "keep faces together" turned off and using the offset attribute in extrude, or use "transform component" to scale several faces using their own centerpoint.
I would guess, the character has been scaled non-uniformly without resetting the transformation matrix afterwards...try reset XForm before adding the Skin Modifier...
Your first idea reminds of the level in the Transformers game on the PS2 made by ATARI where you fight megatron. That game was AMAZING! I also love the blimp idea :) .
i started messing about with make live, but I want my model to snap to the normal of the live object (rotate to match the normal). by default it just transforms the object without rotation. is there a way to do this?

1:do you have a bone named root? 2:most likely you need to reset transforms on the model before rigging. (ie: scale and rotation) and center the pivot.
Oh. I didnt use Motenai's set as reference. Mb I just inspired by him. :) About "net". I used blender for this. Сreated usual grid and transformed it in ZBrush. :)
Thanks for the info doggett, But im using Unity3D :/ So I trying to make it into maya, with UV scroll animation and mesh transform. without vertex animation (it a bit heavy for smartphone)
