Suggestion: Your current hair has a bit of an octopus thing going, similar forms should be combined given the style imo. Completely unrelated but if you aren't going to use the grid in the viewport you can turn it off.
Think of using world position as the basis for a mask. Like.. Think of the world grid AS uv's a d your model being placed and moved around in them. I'll give a more thorough answer later, but see if that analogy helps.
I don't have maya in front of me right now, but there's an option in the UV editor somewhere to snap UVs to pixel corners or pixel centres. I think it might be "grid UVs". Definitely helpful for low-res lightmaps.
True scripts are always a good thing to have, but basic functionality should never be left to scripters. Its like if a 3D app lacked a grid, or loop/ring selection, saying "that's ok, the scripters will fix it!" is not a very good excuse.
You can have any kind of floor wall or roof as long as it fits on a grid even if its a curved geometry or at an angle / slanted. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gxdjc2a7Toc more details on environment art wiki mate!
Ah!...checker grid, very nice piece by the way an Anamorphic Illusion used by Russian street artists to great effect :) EDIT: Wondering if they were also thinking about "Ctrl + X" ing the pigeon in frame, too?! :D
The painting is definitely looking much better! Nice job Have you tried messing with the sil yet? Maybe extruding the wrapped cloth? Oh and personal preference but when you display the model can you remove the grid?

Here's the road I have designed. They are a perfect little square, so they'll always be in a grid. I'm building my whole scene in unity. I'm just doing my modelling in maya. That is the right way to do this, right?
for spikes like in the ref I would totally use the extract spline -> spacing tool trick. you could select a few splines in a row and space them all evenly and in a grid just like the ref really quick.
