l'd transform the two verts one at a time in local space myself. then I'd get frustrated with maya , export to max and finish the job with proper tools ;)

The object you're creating the shape from has been rotated. You need to reset its transforms(apply and collapse an Xform modifier or use the collapse utility)
using the other scaling option (free transform box vs. dedicated scaling tool) will work as well. But yeah, bug still persists in Max '13 and is annoying.
Avatar was incredible for the amount of detail on show. Also my jaw was on the floor for alot of the 2nd transformers movie. The part where everything was joining together was just crazy
