This happens in CS2 as well with the offline "help center" windows. I'm really not sure why this happens, but I noticed it far more in XP than in vista or 7. -

The ring and loop select tools in 7 are pretty awesome, you can actually start and stop a loop/ring wherever you want and then continue it in a different direction. -

If it does end up being your HD giving up the ghost. May I recommend a SSD drive and an upgrade to Windows 7 64? Night and day. -
