Yes I've restarted before reinstalling, there shouldn't be any apps interfering. Compatibility isn't turned on. But I've discovered something: I discovered that when using the auto unwrap tool (Maya Bonus Tools) the problem somehow fixes itself instantly and I can open/create a new scence and everything is still working… -

A good rule of thumb with your occlusion pass - especially where it is applied to skin - don't leave it a flat black. I agree I'm not a fan of separate tracks. If I use it, its on the fingers. Which means I use a lot more keys and poses and spend less time tweaking curves, which is good because curve editing in max can be a nightmare and biped doesn't make that any easier.
