I don't know if 3Ds Max is pointless to learn at this point. It has 10x more games related and focused tutorials than Maya ones from what I've seen e.g Digital Tutors, 3D Motive, Eat3D etc. That's a big incentive for those looking to develop for games. Then you can always make the transfer over to Maya if Max should fall.
Hi guys! About a year ago I made a tutorial about photogrammetry (the one you can get in my signature). Since then it has been downloaded countless times, and I'm super happy about that! At the time it did mostly focus on tileable textures, which I used to do a lot. However it has been more than a year and I have learned…
@Anxious_Tiger - Your welcome! Glad you found it helpful :) @Prophet - It's pretty standard Maya Mental Ray renders with a blinn shader for the high res. You can get loads of great free introduction to MR tutorials on the subject over at Digital-Tutors. For the low res, I'm using Marmoset Toolbag with basic lighting and…
The first thing you have to do when switching between the two is to not expect it to work the same way as Max does! Here's a great post from DJ_ on CGTalk, sums up everything beautifully: learning-maya.com is also a great resource and try out all the basic tutorials there and if you want to get videos Digital-Tutors is…

This is a copy/paste from a post of mine on a similar thread 2 days ago. It's aimed at the poster from that but general enough to apply to anyone. The main thing is just doing. It. Start something. Streamlining your workflow comes later with experience. Plan it out. Search for some ref images for ideas/Inspiration. Or go…
Not great reference, but I was in a time crunch and needed to get the project moving quickly. The head changed, and the final product is a mixture of 2 concept ideas from the Dragon Age: Inquisition art book page of the Envy Demon. I deviated from the reference with the limb lengths too. I got the hands by using a modeling…
I have to agree with Ruz. It reminds me of the way I did faces by slicing, hacking, and cutting my way along, its not "wrong" because it is an important skill to have and will teach you much as you hack and slice. It just isn't as efficent with your time as using edge loops. Also if you keep your loops clean and don't cut…
