Right it is point cloud and I've talked about how they might be able to achieve better results if they used less points and drew faces between the few points they keep... opps now we're back to polygons, heh. The idea he talks about in the Kotaku explanation might actually help to cull unseen faces/verts in traditional…
Well I think mixing in voxel tech with polygon tech could be a good way to solve destructibility issues. But as a full game engine for a AAA title? Not for a while.
The tech has definitely not aged well, looks remarkably mediocre compared to what is being produced today with scan data using good ol fashioned polygons.
I'm a tad curious to know what their programmers think they'll do with this tech (and not just predictable responses from the talking heads). The issue they seem to be faced with, is the dependency on the divergent technology that derived from polygon/texture based games. We managed to find ways to fake SO much stuff, that…
Because in the end when you go "yes but yes but yes but" and have replaced everything that was promising back to polygonal tech due to stuff just being way too expensive to do with this kind of tech, you have already gone back fully to polygons. As mentioned, Carmack has invented tech where we can actually have unique…
30-40 polygon objects that had no LOD's could never run on that hardware on that island size when using polygon meshes with textures, while matching the geometric complexity of the point models in the demonstration. Great, it has 8 GB's of RAM.... but it doesn't have more than 4 TB's of HDD space, I can tell you that for a…
Yeah the accents really strong, even for me D: But yeah, nowadays polygon count is very manageable, and alot of the processing power could be gone into better lighting and physics/interation technology IMO
Is it possible to integrate voxels into a polygon engine? That would make for some excellent foliage simulation. Also this guys is a huge ass. I want the tech to be real, but the PR so far screams vaporware.
Still wonder when those HVDs will be released with it's 6 TB capacity to the general public. It definately will be something to up the graphic capacity maybe for polygonal based games to blast this voxel idea out of the water.
