I believe it is the Volume Selector. It makes it so that it selects vertices or faces that are contained within a specific volume(box,sphere,cylinder, etc).

I tend to believe, that he thinks, that we are modelling with the subdivisions applied(non-reversible). And the only difference i know between modo subD and others is that modo uses a slightly improved subD algorithm.

theirs a easier way, why not take those images since there black and white into photoshop make a vector shape from it bring it back into max and put a shell modifier and play from there , there was a tutorial with that just recently on here I believe?
