3d coat is amazing when it comes to retopology, also i havn`t had any crashes yet. before that i used max 010 freeform tools but max doesn`t seem to work so well with to much geometry for me . i didn`t like zbrush for retopping, i just didn`t like the feel to it and it wasn't always if i accidentally put two verts on top… -

You could easily get another 8gig of RAM and a GTX970 and you'd have a great rig that runs any game at very high specs plus enough horsepower to work decently with any CG software. I have the sony dcr trv-103, might be similar. It records DV on Hi-8 tapes only. Works pretty well, tapes are cheap though the tech is old so I imagine the tapes will become less available as time goes on.
