Downsizing to 512 from a 2048 will lose you A LOT of detail and i dont recommend it. At most you can downsize by 50% to 1024.

Yeah, it's vastly improved in 102. They even went so far as to include some new preset meshes that are very thin, designed to be bisectors...

oh, the pictures with just the face have a much higher texture. a 2k map. Just to show it off. But the one with the entire armor is a 512.

It's there in 2012, that I am sure of. Not certain about 2011 though. The screenshot looks like 2010, or perhaps newer with the old color schemes.

For reference, fixing it in 3dsmax.ini works for me in 2012, shame it doesnt update properly via the UI but hey, just one more for the list. :)

I've been told that a good benchmark for texture size is about, 512 0r 1024 pixels per 2 meters/6 feet.
