I'd go with the cartoon one too...you gonna add any of the other details (logos, patterns, accessories etc), or is your plan to simply match the colour scheme? -

Looks pretty good. Thick ear lobes. Maybe the rules have changed, but generally you never model a face intended for animation with an expression. His forehead looks concerned. -
