I suppose they're bringing the specularity down to two different percentages, one is sharper and one is rougher and than combining them in a way they call as two lobe shading.

Hm, well it does look pretty cool. I think not knowing the scope or direction of this project makes it hard to make sense of. Is that robo-monster hungry for marine flesh??
and on the other side of piors suggestion, if it is the top of his clothes then simply hand editing the normals will work nicely. Fun character. I look forward to seeing it finished. - BoBo
