Okay, I think I've solved both issues. Solution tot the error: I had to find my userprefs.mel file in the documents/maya/2017/prefs folder, open it with a text editor and find: -iv "EEexprEdTextEditor" 0; and change the 0 to a 1. The second problem was 'solved' by resetting my user preferences, however I still don't know… -

Actually he says "nothing happens" if he had said "the RTT window doesn't come up" then we would know for sure. I would agree it sounds more likely that the window isn't showing up, but it is possible that he expects pressing 0 and clicking render to work just like pressing 9 and clicking render. the half life 1 engine is the last ( only) engine i ever remembered having a problem with uvs being outside the 0-1 range. every modern engine will handle what you are planning to do just fine how ever probably not important with bark but i know unreal engine will get less and less precise the further you go away from 0-1… -
